Beltane for Flute and Piano - Ashley John Long

Beltane was written for the flautist Drew Cyster. The work was composed from April-May of 2005 during which time, the Gaelic holiday of Beltane is traditionally celebrated. It captures the mythology and energy that such a festival evokes but although the title may imply strong connotations, it is not a reflection of the festival itself, it alludes simply to the time of year of its composition.

The work is constructed thus: the melodic material is generally created through the constant manipulation of a 5 note cell, (the pitches of which were derived from an Irish folk tune) and has four distinct sections that run concurrently, the proportions of which were determined by charts of the suns progress between the vernal equinox and the summer solstice.
